Building Beautiful Landscapes Around Your Septic System

Unlike children, septic systems should neither be seen nor heard. We want a beautiful property that doesn’t give anyone any reason to be thinking about things like septic systems. And of course this is possible, but there are a few things to think about when landscaping around your septic system.
What You Should Know

Certain types of plants or landscapes near your septic system can cause damage. Like we said, no one wants to have to think about their septic system if we don’t have to, so it’s important to give the septic area special attention while landscaping.

  1. Plant Wisely!
Heavy root systems can do severe damage to septic systems. Trees or large shrubs will send roots down into the soil. Their roots will be attracted to high moisture area, making them grow into septic pipes, displacing, blocking and breaking the pipes. Root systems often grow out 2-4 times further than the diameter of the tree, meaning they should be kept further back than might seem necessary at first.Instead, turn to grasses and wildflowers. They have shallow root systems that will help oxygenate the soil to help the septic system but will not drive down far enough to damage the system. They can even give you clues to the health of the septic system. Sudden lush growth or a burn spot can indicate a problem with the septic system that we can fix before it causes further problems. If you want something more than just a lawn, try a rock garden or decorative paths over the septic area. Decorative grasses or plants that  die back every year should also be safe in the septic area.
  2. Maintain Accessibility
Make sure that your septic system is still accessible. A septic system needs regular maintenance checks, and you’ll want to make sure we can get to it easily when we need to. Don’t plant anything major over your tank or block the tank in with what you plant. Of course, this is also a good time for a reminder about how often you check your septic system.

  3. Consider Drainage
Septic systems are designed carefully for drainage. We don’t want water sitting in the septic area. If you are changing the shape of your yard, be careful not to change the slopes or drainage flow. Do not add in beds or features that would affect the water flow over or away from your field.

In Summary
Considering your septic system does not need to interfere with having a beautiful yard. You will need to take certain steps to protect your septic area, but if you keep these basic tips in mind, you will be able to create a beautiful yard are for your family and friends without compromising the safety of your septic system.
